I would like to make my legacy in Canberra with dance and spread my passion about what dance can bring out in others and what it has brought out in me.
Hopefully I’ll get to travel around the world and spread it there too.
I’m working fulltime at Kulture Break, basically teaching at primary schools. I do after school classes and teach a mentoring program for girls. It’s going really well. I want to share my passion for dance with everyone from as young as 3-5 years to adults. It’s great to meet new people every day and go to different locations.
My three favorite things in life are dance, family and friends, and food.
The story of me being in Canberra today is that my parents moved from the Philippines about twenty years ago to be in Australia so that they could have a better future for me and my older sisters.
I am 19 years old. I live in Canberra, I was born here. I’m pretty much the first girl in my family to be born here, while my sisters were born in the Philippines.
What it means to me to be a woman is being myself. I think most of that comes from my family and how they taught me to be a self-respecting woman and to be surrounded by people who really respect themselves and inspire me to be the best person I can be.
I think in general all the women here are pretty amazing—they’ve come and gone from different countries. They’re here to meet other women and also spread their message about what they’re doing right now.
I think right now domestic violence is the number one thing that’s happening in Canberra. I think that it’s really hard and the media today perceive that women are in danger of domestic violence, whereas we are forgetting about the men as well.
It’s really important that we protect ourselves and that we’re very aware to be cautious when we’re out and about at places because you never know what could happen.
I was in LA a few days ago and I saw how different the culture was there to here, like how big the food portion sizes are. I would say that being here in Canberra might be a little bit easier for me to maintain my health and wellbeing, especially because I dance every other day, but also I go to the gym. I think it’s really good that Canberra is spread out that way, and so when I do get time I walk around the lake.
My perfect day in Canberra would be weather like this, maybe going to the Cotter and having a nice relaxing time by the river with a picnic.
